Womens team aim for top spot

Updated: February 22, 2016

It is shaping up to be a big year for our Women’s team in 2016, eyeing off another finals berth and hopefully their first premiership.

Head Coach John Dimond provided us his review for the upcoming season: “With most of the 2015 team participating in over sports over summer or working it was difficult to get more than half a dozen players to preseason training. One of positives is that a couple of new players turned up and did most of the preseason program.

With a some of the girls gaining new employment, going F/T after study, taking on new commitments and medical reasons we have lost 10 of the 25 players who finished the season last year. To date we have managed to recruit 4 new players and we are working to get more on board as we head into our practice games.

The training sessions have been impressive during February as the girls have shown they have either maintained or improved their skill levels. The completion of our drills is also at a higher level something that will help us as we head into the season proper. I must thank Jack and Ash from Div1 for including the women in the pre-training sessions, they are a lot of fun and more importantly reinforce the basic skills to the women.

First division this year will see 13 teams compete for the finals. There are 3 new teams and Wollongong has dropped back from premier division after having only 1 win in 2015. With 12 other teams to play it is shaping up as an exciting and challenging year. Last year as the only new team we were written off before the start but the ladies surprised everyone except us. This makes you wonder what the 3 new teams will do and we know Wollongong was runner up in this division 2 years ago. We are quietly confident we will be there come mid-August even though we have lost so many players including a couple of key positional players. I am confident our new ladies will develop into stars just like last year.

My tip, get down and watch the Magic Ladies, They Never Give In”
