Division 5 Round 3 vs Southern Power

Div 5 Round 3 Match Report

Round 3 saw the Magic’s Division 5 team take the long journey south to the Sutherland Shire to play against Southern Power.

Blacktown Magic’s playing roster was boosted with the likes of Andrew Carey and Andrew Kent as both players were made available due to the wet weather cancellations in Division 3. The game started at a furious pace with plenty physical challenges as both teams vying for the upper hand. However it was Hamish Mulligan and Craig Reynolds, both playing their best games of the season, slotting two goals respectively to help slowly build the lead in the first quarter.

James Shepherd, playing his first ever AFL game, played well in the ruck and provided the midfielders with enough possessions to help drive the ball forward and create the scoring opportunities. The first half was a closely fought battle with both teams putting in the efforts to keep the game close with the Magic able to enter the sheds with a 21 point lead.

However by half time, the Magic suffered the loss of three players due to injuries which left the Magicians with only one interchange for the entire second half of the game. The second half began with the Magic having to reshuffle the team to help with rotations and resting players with the only one interchange.

This brought the opportunity for Daniel McIntyre to have a run in the midfield and turned out to be a extremely effective move by coach Ben Gray, as Daniel kicked three consecutive goals in the third quarter. Even though the Magic were down to only one interchange, they were able to build to solid lead for the rest of the game and carry this through the fourth quarter although a late surge by the Power made it a tense finish.

The Magic worked well together to create a strong win especially after a heavy loss against UTS in round 2. It was a good result and was encouraging to see all the Magicians who were playing in their first season of AFL, now starting to show their knowledge of the game and enjoying the game as a team.
