Division 5 Round 1 vs Holroyd Parramatta

Div 5 Round 1 Match Report

The wait is over, Round 1 is here. Five months of preseason training and recruiting has brought upon this historic moment for Blacktown Magic with their Division 5 team playing their first game in the Sydney AFL Division 5 Competition.

Blacktown Magic travelled to Gipps Road Oval to take on Holroyd Parramatta, a seasoned component in the Division 5 Competition. With 15 Magicians playing their first ever game of AFL it was shaping up to be an interesting first round hitout between the two Western Sydney opponents. Blacktown Magic were boosted with the likes of Luke Penrith, Daniel Clifford, Iain Freeman and Hamish Mulligan showing their experience on the park for the first match of the year.

The siren blasted and history was being made. The opening bounce brought upon some nervous hand passes and kicks from the Magic as they were being tested early on by Parramatta. However the first goal was kicked from some excellent movement across the park resulting in a mark 30 metre out from Matthew Keevil, who calmy slotted home the first 6 pointer of the game. At the end of the quarter it was a tied affair with both teams wrestling for the control of the match. The first half was evenly matched with only a few goals from both sides but the Magic were slowly finding their feet in the world of AFL to which they were able to go into the break slightly ahead after some solid defence by the Magic and goals by Jordan Rohr and Matthew Berg.

In the second half, Blacktown Magic started to dictate play from the centre after the solid ruckman work from Shannon Deusson and support of on-ballers Aaron Hill and Dean Barber. Hill and Barber were the engines behind the Magic’s movement both going hard and helping to get the clearances – they were hard to separate for best on ground. The lead started to widen as the younger legs of Rohr and experience of Jamie Miller provided excellent service from the wings into the forward line resulting with Keevil and Daryl Hinton both kicking multiple goals. Some great team work from the forward line by Matthew Clifford and Craig Reynolds resulted in a fantastic goal late in the third quarter by Joshua Stephenson, who slotted home from the pocket on an acute angle.

Special note must go to the defence of the Magic in particular Stuart Pike, Scott Stocker, Pranav Rampal and David Lau Young keeping Parramatta to only 2 points in the middle 2 quarters of the game which allowed their forwards to flourish. The last kick of the game went to the well deserving full forward, Jared Clifford, who slotted home his first goal for the Magic after from some great team work through the middle of the park.

The Magic came out convincing winners in the end  13.14 (92) – 5.3 (33) and the celebrations were hard to contain with the new boys on the block having their first win as a team and belting out the Magic’s song. Blacktown Magic coach Ben Gray stated, “It was a good result to have a win first round and for the team to get to sing the team’s song. We look forward to the challenge of UTS at our first home game next week at The Ponds.”
