Division 3 Round 1 vs Gosford

Div 3 Round 1 Match Report

Football is back and the Blacktown Magic had a historic day on Saturday in Round 1 of the Sydney AFL competition. For the first time in the clubs short history, they had two sides competing, with the Division 3 side taking on Gosford and the Division 5 side playing Parramatta-Holroyd. Both sides posted comprehensive victories to start off their campaigns.

The side travelled north to Bateau Bay to take on the Gosford Wildcats. Both teams started strong, without much difference between the sides at quarter time. After a tight opening, the Magic midfield started to take control. Lead by Andrew Polkinghorne and Kent Weir, being well fed by Michael Collins in the ruck, the tide started to turn. The back 6, with new full-back Joey Saunders, started to dominate the back half. This allowing the new forward combination of Ethan Barclay, Ash Moeller and the classy Jeff Talbot to get the scoreboard ticking over. From here the Magic had control of the match and didn’t look back, coming away with a 125-57 victory.

The hard work during the pre-season paid off as the Magic ran over the top of the bigger Gosford side and moved the ball well through the middle of the ground. Michael Collins played his first game of AFL football and was a standout across the ground and Jeff Talbot started his year off well kicking four impressive goals.

It was great to see the Magic back on the park and claiming the victory on the road for their first hit out of the season. Both sides play at home in Round 2 at the Ponds and will be hoping for a repeat of what was a fantastic way to start the season.
