THE Ponds-based Blacktown Magic, in just their second year, have been crowned the Swisse AFL Quality Club of the Year.

It has been a big year for the team as they also made the grand final of Sydney AFL Division Three competition, which will be played this Saturday.

The competition invited local AFL clubs to enter a video explaining why their club is so great.

Magic were announced as the winners and received $5000 cash, two tickets to the 2013 AFL Brownlow Medal and the Swisse Ultimate Sportsman’s Night.

The fledgling club’s short video showcasing its People, Passion, Health and Happiness received the most online votes out of the top 10 clubs short-listed in the inaugural competition.

Club spokesman Bradley Whale was ecstatic with the result after the club’s second year.

“We have come so far in such a short period of time and to win a national award open to all 3000 AFL community Clubs is just great for our club and footy in western Sydney,” Whale said.

“The Swisse Quality Clubs program is a great initiative to help raise the standard of club land.

“We also had a lot of fun filming our video for the competition.”

GWS Giants co-captain Phil Davis and team-mate Dylan Shield presented the $5000 cheque to Blacktown Magic last week.

“The $5000 is a substantial help when you are trying to build a club from the foundations and it will help buy those essential things like footballs, cones and water bottles,” Davis said.

“It’s a great head start and a great initiative from Swisse and excellent for western Sydney and setting the foundation for a strong club in the future.”

The team will play Randwick City in the final showdown on Saturday at Blacktown International Sportspark at 11am.
