Division Two –  First Semi Final vs Western Suburbs.

Given the weather of late and the high possibility of another wet game the coaching panel went with an even balance of talls and smalls to account for Wests dangerous forward line and strong midfield.

Rocking up to Gipps Rd in a positive and confident mindset that the Magic traditionally play the ground well and with a near full strength side at our disposal (minus Dean Connors), would hold us in good stead for our first taste of finals for 2014.

We got off to a flyer in the wet conditions with repeat entries into the forward 50 giving us numerous opportunities to put Wests to the sword early.  It wasn’t until midway through the quarter that the boys started putting the score on the board when player Coach Leighton Corr used the breeze to perfection to slot the opener.  Late quarter goals to Clinchy and an opportune goal to skipper and CHB Joshy Mann saw us take a 3-1-19 to 1-0-6 lead into quarter time after a thoroughly dominant quarter.

A second quarter stale mate saw the Magic hold off several West forward movements which showed that the boys were here to play.  The backline lead by Dave Bertram and Brad Whale with Key match-ups smothered the Wests forward line and rebounded well in the trying conditions.  If not for an early sneaky goal to DK in which he beat 3 Wests blokes in a contest, the quarter would have been goal less.  A Half Time lead 4-2-26 to 1-2-8.

The rooms were a buzz with anticipation and confidence that one strong quarter could confirm a hard earned  win.  What would follow was an avalanche of 6 goals inside 10 mins of footy.  Timmy and the Mids (Polks, Nugs and Cliffo were rampant out of the middle providing Ash 2, Clinch 1, Akers 1, Polks 1 and Gil 1, goals for the quarter and inevitably shutting off any chance of a Wests revival.  The relentless tackle pressure and run from the boys was a positive sign of things to come in the 2014 finals series.  At 3rd quarter time, the Magic lead 10-5-65 to 3-3-21.

The last quarter was a mere formality as Wests provided a more stern performance and showed enough signs as to why they finished 2nd at the end of the home and away rounds.  Wests won the final quarter by a solitary point courtesy of a goal after the siren but the damage was done in the first 3 quarters and the opening of the last which saw a rewarding goal to Hilly and an open goal to Clinchy courtesy of Akers good one on one work.  Final Score 12-7-79 Def Wests 5-6-36.

We look to taking on Sydney Uni next week for a shot at the 2014 Grand Final.  With a 1-1 record against them this season it shapes for an interesting battle.

Go the Magic!
